(Gouty Arthritis) Vatarakta / Uric Acid Treatment in Ayurveda

Introduction
Gout is a metabolic disease which occurs as a result of pathological reaction of the joint or periarticular tissues due to the presence of Monosodium Urate (MSU) and Monohydrate crystals in the body.The big toe [first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP)] is the classic site for gout. One-third of patients may get their first attack at another site such as the in-step of the foot,ankle, knee or hand joints.Can be correlated to Vatapittadhika Vatarakta.

Causes
There are number of reasons  including :
Diet,
Genetic predisposition
Underexcretion of urate,
The salts of uric acid.
Other risk factors for developing gout include obesity, excessive weight gain (especially in youth), moderate to heavy alcohol intake, high blood pressure, abnormal kidney function and eating too much meat and fish that are high in chemicals called purines. Some medicines, such as diuretics, can also bring on gout.
In patients at risk of developing gout, certain conditions can precipitate acute attacks of gout. These conditions include dehydration, injury to the joint, fever, excessive eating and recent surgery.

Sign and Symptoms
Sandhi Shoola (Joint pain),
Sopha (Swelling),
Raga  (Erythema),
Sparshasahatva (Extreme tenderness in affected joints) and
Stambha (Joint stiffness).

Treatment
Main Aim of Treatment is to prevent further damage to any joints along with to keep serum uric acid towards Normal.
Hence Ayurvedic management of Gouty arthritis includes both
Internal Therapies which includes Diet, Medicines and Panchkarma (internal Body Detoxification) And
External Therapies Swedna (Special Pain relieving oil therapies) and Abhyanga (Special Ayurvedic oil massage)
