Prakruti – Getting to know youself through Ayurveda

Diagnosis and treatment of any disease in Ayurveda depends upon the overall personality of the person called as prakruti – (प्रकृति).

Prakruti depends upon the predominant dosh (दोष) that a body is made of. There are seven main types of prakruti i.e

Vataj (वातज)
Pittaj (पित्तज)
Kaphaj (कफज)
Vatpittaj
Vatkaphaj
Pittavataj
Pittakaphaj
Kaphavataj
Kaphapittaj
Sannipataj (combination of all three doshas).

Each dosha has its own properties and qualities and the person with the main dosha predominant exhibits similar kind of nature. Lets learn a bit about properties of doshas:

Vataj – such person is of dry nature. Dry skin, Dry scalp, Thin body,May have constipation & generally may suffer from vayu (air) predominant symptoms like pain in different parts of body.

Pittaj – such person has moderate physique. Grasps things very fast, active in nature and may have acidity or metabolic problems, may have acne skin etc.

Kaphaj – such person has a heavy body with more water content. Person may be lazy by nature but intelligent. Memory is good, likes to sit for a long time and may have often cold and sinus problems or congestion etc.

Working of Ayurvedic medicines

To understand how exactly ayurvedic medicines work we need to know a bit of human body science as per our old scholars.

Sushruta rishi has done the maximum effort in this i.e Anatomy of human body.

The whole science of Ayurveda is based upon the fact that our body is made up of three main doshas n seven dhatus (Doshas and Dhatus).

Three doshas (दोष) are

vat (वात),
pitta (पित्त),
kapha (कफ)

Seven dhatus (धातु) are

rasa (रस)
rakta (रक्त)
mamsa (माम्सा)
medas (मेदस)
asthi (अस्थि)
majja (मज्जा)
shukra (शुक्र)

All diseases occur due to permutation n combination of above doshas and dhatus. Accordinly treatment in Ayurveda is also based upon the fact that which dosha or dhatu is increased or decreased.

The goal is creating a balance among athe above doshas and dhatus.

सम दोष सम धातु सम अग्नि मल श च।

Drugs used in treating the imblances are chosen depending upon the qualities they have (गुण धर्मं) so that they maintain balance among all doshas n dhatus.

Ayurveda – a new beginning

Of course it is an ancient science; ancient to our roots. India does not only have cultural heritage but medicinal too. Since ages there have been other medicinal systems too but Ayurveda make its mark.

There have been references in many books on History of Ayurveda (like Ashtanga sangraha etc ) that this science was gifted to Shri Atreya Maharishi from Lord Brahma Himself and thus descended from heaven to earth.

Lets warm up today with this shloka on aim of Ayurveda “स्व्स्थ्स्य स्वास्थय रक्षणं आतुरास्य विकार प्रशनम च.(सु.संहिता) i.e to maintain the health of a healthy person and to remove the disease of an ill person is the aim of Ayurveda..”

The whole treatment of this science is based on the above said shloka.
